The Royal Canadian Navy is coming under fire for steering away from its official march, Heart of Oak, because the centuries-old anthem contains references to colonialism and slavery, and doesn’t represent everyone who wears the uniform, including women and Francophones. “The Heart of Oak was written in 1759,” said Defence Minister Bill Blair, who took questions about ditching the British march Friday at the Halifax International Security Forum. “I think it is a tradition and we’re not necessarily saying that we abandon all tradition. But I think the new Royal Canadian Navy has a right to choose its own path forward and I would certainly support that.” Blair said he’s “seen people trying to suggest that this is part of some other agenda. Quite frankly, I think that’s nonsense. I think the Royal Canadian Navy has every right to continue to advance and modernize, and if they want to have an anthem that’s appropriate for them and theirs alone, how can we say no?” When asked if a more modern march could help the navy’s recruiting efforts, Blair said, “Canada’s a diverse country. We need great people in the Canadian Armed Forces. And great people, for us, includes great women, great Indigenous candidates — great diverse Canadians are all part of what makes a great and strong Canadian Armed Forces.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre took to social media Friday to criticize the navy’s decision to tack away from Heart of Oak. “More woke nonsense erasing Canada’s proud military history and traditions,” Poilievre said on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Meanwhile NDP-Liberals have been asleep at the switch refusing to supply our armed forces with the equipment and supplies they need to defend Canada at home and abroad. When I’m Prime Minister, we will have a warrior culture, not a woke culture.” The song has raised concerns “within the ranks of the Royal Canadian Navy,” national defence spokeswoman Andrée-Anne Poulin said in an email. “First performed in 1760, ‘Heart of Oak’ contains language that does not align with values and ethos of today’s Royal Canadian Navy or the broader Canadian Armed Forces. Specifically, it includes references to colonialism and slavery, and language that is not representative of all those who serve in today’s Navy.” Plus, the march doesn’t have Canadian roots, she said. “It was adopted early in the Royal Canadian Navy’s history from the Royal Navy. In the 114 years since Canada created its own naval service, sailors of the Royal Canadian Navy have forged a tremendous legacy of selfless service, a tradition that today’s sailors proudly continue. As such, it is time for the Royal Canadian Navy to have a march that is unique — that recognizes Canadian traditions of naval service and speaks to today’s Navy and its sailors — one that every sailor can be proud of and rally around.” Heart of Oak’s ship hasn’t sailed just yet. While efforts have been “launched to examine the possibility of changing the official march for the Royal Canadian Navy to bring it more in line with the realities of today’s naval service, while looking forward to the future,” Poulin said, no decision has been made yet to change it. “The matter remains under consideration at this time, and more information will be made available once a way ahead has been finalized.” For some naval watchers, veering away from Heart of Oak isn’t a bad idea. The Canadian navy used to have “a cultural loyalty to all things British,” said defence analyst Ken Hansen, a former Canadian naval commander. “They sent their students to the U.K. to get their advanced training, they listened to British music and their uniforms were British.” If the song is replaced, it needs to be done with something that’s “more relevant and appealing,” Hansen said. He doubts changing it is at the top of the navy’s to-do list. “If that’s where they’re focusing their attention, then I’m concerned about their priorities,” Hansen said. Paul Adamthwaite, a Canadian naval historian and former Brit who served 22 years in the Royal Navy, said he doesn’t disagree with diversity. “But there is something that is called tradition, and navies rely on tradition,” Adamthwaite said. “We rely on past experience to be able to be a fighting force if and when needed by the country.” Canada’s navy was launched in 1910 with “two clapped-out old ships from Britain,” he said. “By the end of World War II, we had the third largest navy in the world and there was some pride in it — absolute pride,” said Adamthwaite, executive director of the Naval Marine Archive in Picton, Ont. He doubts many in uniform know the lyrics to Heart of Oak. “If you ask any sailor in the Royal Navy or the Royal Canadian Navy what the words are, I bet you won’t find one in 50 who knows the words,” Adamthwaite said. “I can understand that, for diversity reasons, there is some wording that is not politically correct today. But it’s not insulting. It is traditional.” While the lyrics to Heart of Oak might have to change, the navy should keep the tune, he said. “There is nothing politically incorrect about the music.” Canada can’t “build a new navy without building on the old,” Adamthwaite said. Unfortunately, the years following the pandemic have wiped out a decade of Ubisoft's stock gains. The company has struggled to develop and ship ever-larger games, and its recent releases haven't met market expectations. After announcing plans to shut down the free-to-play online shooter XDefiant next year, Ubisoft closed its San Francisco and Osaka studios and laid off almost 300 employees. The game's failure adds to the publisher's troublesome year after Star Wars Outlaws suffered a lukewarm reception and Assassin's Creed Shadows got pushed into next year. Additionally, Ubisoft stoked controversy and attracted a lawsuit after shutting down servers for The Crew and pulling the game from users' libraries. Charging $70 on top of microtransactions for Skull and Bones, which spent around seven years in development, also drew ire. Despite the setbacks, Ubisoft remains committed to releasing more live-service games. A buyout isn't the only solution the Guillemots are discussing to stabilize the company. By Jack Phillips Contributing Writer Police released new photos of an individual wanted for questioning in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City on Wednesday, as police still hunt for the shooter. The New York City Police Department on Thursday released photos showing what it described as a “person of interest wanted for questioning” in the shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left Thompson dead. The person, who appears to be male, is seen without a mask and smiling. It’s not clear where the photos were captured. “All indications are that it was a premediated, targeted attack,” the NYPD said in an X post, reiterating a previous statement made by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch about the shooting. The NYPD said that anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest and conviction can receive a $10,000 reward, asking the public to contact Crime Stoppers with any information. Other than the post on X, the NYPD has not provided any official updates on its manhunt since Wednesday’s news conference with Tisch, including a name or motive in the case. Photos and video footage released Wednesday show a male suspect, wearing a hooded jacket, approaching Thompson from behind near a Midtown Hilton hotel before he fired multiple shots. The suspect appeared to have a noise suppressor, or silencer, attached to his handgun, and he also appeared to rack the pistol’s slide multiple times. The photos and video footage, however, do not show the individual’s face due to the camera angle. Another set of photos shows the person wearing what appears to be a dark ski mask. In the incident, Thompson was approaching the Hilton for a UnitedHealth Group annual shareholder meeting. In the news conference, Tisch said that the suspect was waiting for Thompson for several minutes before firing at him and allowed several bystanders to pass by him. After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot before getting on an electric bike, officials said on Wednesday. He was last seen approaching Central Park’s Center Drive, they said. Unconfirmed media reports, citing anonymous police sources, claimed that messages were scrawled on bullets or shell casings that were left behind at the scene of the crime. Those reports, which emerged Thursday, could not be independently verified. UnitedHealth is the largest U.S. health insurer, providing benefits to tens of millions of Americans. Thompson, a father of two, had been the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, since April 2021. The company has been grappling with the fallout from a massive data hack of its Change Healthcare unit that provides technology for U.S. health care providers, disrupting medical care for patients and reimbursement to doctors for months. Thompson had worked at UnitedHealth since 2004 in several divisions, according to a biography later removed from the company’s website. “Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him,” the health insurance giant said in a statement released on its website, also confirming his death. The corporation said it is working with the NYPD and other law enforcement officials in the case. In Maple Grove, Minnesota, where Thompson lived, police administrator Theresa Keehn said that there were no reports of threats against him. However, there was one reported incident of “suspicious activity” at his home in June 2018, she said. The trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign that dropped during The Game Awards on Thursday doesn’t actually explain what’s going on. It opens with overhead shots of a world that looks sort of like The Lands Between if it was missing its giant golden tree, and then spends the next three minutes showing things that simply weren’t possible in Elden Ring . Characters fight bosses out in the open world, fly across lava on ghostly eagles, and — hold up — was that a grappling hook? Yeah, that’s totally a grappling hook, according to hands-on previews from PC Gamer and IGN . Elden Ring Nightreign has eight heroes to choose from and one of them has the ability to yank himself toward enemies so he can set off an explosion that deals loads of damage. You read that right: This is a spinoff adventure where you won’t make your own character. Instead, there are several heroes to play as and ways to upgrade their unique abilities as you go. Elden Ring Nightreign isn’t about clawing your way to another throne; it’s about surviving three nights in an ever-changing realm of familiar and unfamiliar monsters with your buddies. You might even call it a cooperative run-based roguelike set on a randomized map that looks a lot like Limgrave, Elden Ring ’s opening area. PC Gamer says each session lasts around 30 minutes as long as you don’t get swallowed up by a dangerous ring that closes in on you like in a battle royale. You start each run at level 1 and cash in runes to boost all your stats at once, sort of like the Scadutree Blessing system in Shadow of the Erdtree . Camps, caves, and crumbling ruins will be your sources for loot, but what you find will change each time. Enemy placements will shift around too, and should you fall, your teammates will be able to revive you. It’ll be a scramble to gear up before the sun goes down and one of the game’s bosses appears to gate your progress. It wouldn’t be a FromSoft game if dying didn’t sting. If your teammates don’t reach you in time, you’ll respawn nearby and lose all your runes and one level. Both PC Gamer and IGN make it seem like this isn’t as bad as it sounds given how fast you accrue runes, but it can certainly lead to a full party wipe and end the run prematurely. For that reason, you may want to stick to playing with friends rather than random players. Even though Nightreign’s focus is on co-op, FromSoft hasn’t come up with anything better than setting up a shared multiplayer password to play with your pals. The seamless co-op mod has spoiled me. There are plenty of other details in PC Gamer and IGN’s write-ups, like how each hero works and what kind of cool combos you can perform with your allies. But neither of them explain why bosses from Dark Souls are in the trailer. I know I’m not the only one who saw all the cameos from Dark Souls 3 . Who does FromSoft think it’s fooling with that cloaked lady wearing the mask? That’s my Fire Keeper . All the press release says is that Nightreign is set in “a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring ,” and the lore-fiend in me is desperate to know more. The Centre for Ageing Better said data analysed on its behalf suggested more than a fifth of people in this age group are living in a poor-quality home that could be making their existing health condition worse. It said people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, those living in London and those who have a serious health condition or disability are more likely to be affected. Data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing covering 2022/23 was analysed by the National Centre for Social Research on behalf of the charity. It found an estimated 4.5 million people aged 50 or older in England with a health condition aggravated by the cold are living in a home with one or more serious problems. Some 2.8 million were aged between 50 and 70, while 1.7 million were aged 70 and older. Health conditions included respiratory diseases, congestive heart failure, heart disease and lung conditions, including asthma. Housing problems identified in the research included damp, water leaks, bad condensation, electrical or plumbing problems, rot and decay. While some 2.2 million people over 50 with health and housing problems owned their home outright, the biggest proportion of people (51%) with such issues lived in rented accommodation. The charity said older renters with a health condition were up to three times more likely to have five or more issues with their home than someone in the same age group who owns their home. Those with a health condition that can be affected by poor housing who had a significant issue in their homes were most likely to live in London (52%) followed by the North East (35%) and the North West (35%), the West Midlands and the East of England (both on 28%), and the South West (27%). Almost half (46%) of people aged 50 and above from black and minority ethnic backgrounds with one of the health conditions had at least one problem with their home, which the charity said amounted to almost 500,000 people. Among white people in this age group it was just under one in three (32%). The research also suggested people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds living with a health condition were also more than twice as likely to have five or more issues with their housing compared with their white counterparts – 15% compared with 6%. Dr Carole Easton, the charity’s chief executive, said not only does the research show the difficulties faced by those living in poor housing, but it is also “very bad news” for both the economy and the NHS. She said: “Our latest research shows that our poor-quality housing crisis is putting people with health conditions in their 50s, 60s and beyond, in harm’s way. “This is obviously terrible for those individuals who live in homes that carry a very real risk of making them sick, particularly when winter comes around. “But it is also very bad news for the country. Older workers living in homes that are making their health conditions worse are going to be less likely to be able to work and help grow the economy. “Older people whose serious health conditions are made worse by their homes will require treatment, putting additional winter pressures on our health system. “All could be averted if we tackled poor-quality housing with the urgency and priority it demands.” Holly Holder, deputy director for homes at the charity, said the Government must “fix this hidden housing crisis by delivering a national strategy to tackle poor quality housing across all tenures and committing to halving the number of non-decent homes over the next decade”. She added: “No-one should have to live in a home that damages their health, yet it is the norm for far too many people in England today. “By failing to address poor-quality homes we are limiting the lives of some of the country’s poorest and most vulnerable people. “Our new analysis shows that the combination of health and house problems are most likely to impact groups of people who are already disadvantaged by multiple health and wealth inequalities.” A Government spokesperson said: “Despite the challenging inheritance faced by this Government, through our Plan for Change we’re taking action to improve housing conditions across all tenures and ensure homes are decent, safe and warm – especially for the most vulnerable. “We’re consulting on reforms to the Decent Homes Standard next year to improve the quality of social and privately rented housing, and introducing Awaab’s Law to both sectors to tackle damp, dangerous and cold conditions for all renters in England. “Our warm homes plan will also help people find ways to save money on energy bills and deliver cleaner heating, with up to 300,000 households to benefit from upgrades next year.”US border arrests drop 17% in November, dousing predictions of post-election surge
