People engage in gaming through a variety of formats , from consoles to mobile devices, driven by factors like convenience, cost, and immersive experiences. This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Kayla Zhu, visualizes the share of U.S. consumers that reported gaming on a specific device within the past month, using data from a Circana online survey of 5,100 active U.S. gamers conducted in May through June 2024. The categories of gaming devices are as follows: Mobile: iPhone, Android smartphone, iPad, and other smartphone or tablet devices Computer: Desktop, laptop, Steam Deck, or other portable PC devices Console: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Wii Other: Virtual reality (VR) headsets, plug-and-play devices, child-oriented devices Below, we show the share of U.S. consumers ages two and up that played on a qualifying device within the previous month of Circana’s survey. Over half of gamers’ weekly playtime takes place on their phones, according to Circana. The main draw is convenience, as players already have their devices with them, along with the low cost and easy accessibility of mobile games. PC and console gaming are almost evenly tied, with 36% and 35% of respondents gaming on these platforms respectively. When looking these formats’ market shares , console gaming held a slight lead over PC gaming with 57% of the 2023 market share, or $53.1 billion revenue compared to PC’s $40.4 billion. The “Other” gaming category grew by 2% since 2022 due to increased adoption of virtual reality (VR) gaming. VR usage and ownership among U.S. teens is on the rise, with weekly VR use increasing from 10% to 13% and headset ownership growing from 31% to 33% over the past six months, according to a survey by Piper . As we approach 2025, designated by the National Institutes of Health as the year of the brain, it’s the perfect time to prioritize your brain health and boost your brain performance. Your brain is a vital part of who you are, and taking steps now can lead to a healthier and happier you in the years ahead. To help enhance your brain health and safeguard your cognitive well-being, I’ve created a mnemonic: BRAIN. This stands for Boundaries, Rest, Active, Ingest, and Nurture. Each component represents a key factor on your journey to becoming a better version of yourself in 2025. Adopting these five strategies can unleash your limitless capacity to achieve your personal best. Boundaries Maintaining boundaries is crucial for your mental and emotional well-being. This creates a protective barrier that shields you from negativity, manipulation, and unnecessary stress. Recognizing your own needs and effectively communicating them to those around you is not optional; it's necessary. While saying "yes" may open doors, saying "no" can close off those that should never have been opened. It can be challenging when someone consistently drains your energy or causes you pain. If you're feeling uncertain about the purpose of that relationship , it might be a sign to take a step back and evaluate its value in your life. Your well-being is important, and you deserve connections that uplift and support you. Boundaries are a vital expression of self-respect. Remember, if others value you, they will also respect the boundaries you establish. By setting these boundaries, you create the space needed to focus on nurturing yourself and attend to other critical elements for optimizing your brain health. Establishing boundaries is the first step in your path to growth and achieving happiness in the new year. Rest Rest is extremely important for our brain health, and it's something we often overlook in our busy lives. Taking time to rest allows our brains to recover and repair, which is essential for maintaining our mental and cognitive well-being. When we sleep , our brains consolidate our memories, process information, and clear out toxins that can build up during the day. These toxins have been linked to conditions like dementia, which highlights just how critical it is to get good rest. By getting enough sleep, we strengthen our neural connections, making it easier to learn and remember new things. Additionally, rest plays a vital role in helping us regulate our emotions. It gives our brains the chance to recharge, which in turn helps us manage stress. When we don’t get sufficient rest, we may find ourselves struggling with concentration, cognitive performance, and even our mood, opening the door to mental health challenges such as anxiety or depression. Remember, it's okay to take a step back and prioritize sleep. Doing so not only helps maintain optimal brain function but also boosts our productivity and fosters our long-term brain health. You’re not alone in this—many of us need reminders to slow down and care for ourselves. Active While it is important to rest and get a good night’s sleep, it is also important to keep your mind and body active. Consider incorporating practices such as reading books, listening to enlightening podcasts, attending educational lectures, and learning new skills. These activities can effectively stimulate your brain and promote an active neural network. In addition to mental stimulation, finding ways to include physical activity in your daily routine can foster significant benefits for your brain health. Regular exercise plays a vital role in enhancing blood flow to the brain, which optimizes the delivery of oxygen and nutrients. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals that promote neuron growth and make your brain more adaptable. This adaptability is important for learning and memory. Moreover, engaging in physical activity can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which negatively impact brain health. Exercise also naturally boosts your mood by releasing endorphins, which can help alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression that may hinder cognitive function. By actively nurturing both your mind and body, you can enhance mental clarity, focus, and overall cognitive performance. This approach not only promotes immediate well-being but also contributes to a lower risk of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, in the long term. Ingest What you put into your body is essential for your overall well-being. A healthy diet fuels your brain with the vital nutrients it needs to stay focused and sharp. It’s crucial to maintain a balanced intake of nutrients from a variety of sources, such as fruits, vegetables, fish, and other wholesome foods. If you’re unsure how to implement a nutritious diet, don’t hesitate to consult your medical provider. Many healthcare providers are well-equipped to offer valuable dietary guidance. If your provider is unable to craft a detailed dietary plan for you, seeking the expertise of a dietitian or nutritionist is a smart choice. It’s also critical to recognize what to avoid or consume in moderation. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder in the US is concerning. If you find yourself needing to cut back on drinking , feeling annoyed by others’ criticism of your habits, lying about your consumption, experiencing guilt over your drinking, or reaching for a drink first thing in the morning, it’s time to seek help. If your life revolves around alcohol or illicit substances like cocaine or narcotics, getting assistance is essential. These substances can be harmful to your brain, damaging neurons and other cells that support brain function. Prioritizing your health and seeking support is a powerful step forward. Nurturing Relationships There are many types of relationships that are critical for brain health. If you have family and friends who can provide a supportive environment, it is important to spend time with them. Building strong social connections helps create stronger neural pathways in your brain. Socializing with friends and family increases the production of certain chemicals that contribute to improved well-being. If you belong to a specific faith, consider strengthening relationships within your religious community. If you have a medical condition, joining a support group can connect you with others who share similar experiences. Another beneficial type of nurturing relationship is with members of your medical team. The more your provider understands your life and challenges, the better advice they can offer for maintaining your health. Don’t hesitate to openly discuss what is happening in your life, including any difficulties you may encounter in following your treatment plan. For example, if you can’t afford medication or certain recommended therapies due to high deductibles or copays, let your provider know. Likewise, if you have food, housing or transportation insecurity, this should also be shared with your medical provider as they may be able to provide referrals to help you overcome these challenges. Maintaining optimal brain health and boosting your brain performance are essential for overall well-being and longevity. Boundaries protect your mental space, eating a nutritious diet fuels your brain, and limiting alcohol use helps prevent cognitive decline. Additionally, structured cognitive and physical activity boosts brain function and memory, and adequate rest allows the brain to repair and recharge. Equally important are nurturing healthy relationships with friends, family, and medical providers, as strong social connections and professional support promote emotional resilience and mental clarity. Together, these practices can help setup your mind and body to be vibrant and sharp as you navigate 2025.Blue Ivy and the dangers of being a Nepo Child when things go wrong

Southern California’s notorious Santa Ana winds were predicted to return Monday night and utilities said they are prepared to cut power to hundreds of thousands of customers in areas where strong gusts could damage electrical equipment and spark wildfires. The National Weather Service issued a rare “particularly dangerous situation,” or PDS, red flag warning for high fire risk into Tuesday for Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The last time PDS red flags went up was the first week of November, when powerful, dry winds fed the Mountain Fire, which destroyed at least 240 buildings, mostly homes, in Ventura County. Before that, a PDS red flag warning hadn’t been issued for the region since 2020. “This event has the potential to be as strong as the November 5th-6th Santa Ana event that led to the Mountain Fire,” the weather service office for Los Angeles said Sunday on social media. Southern California Edison said it was considering targeted power shut-offs for more than 250,000 homes and businesses across seven counties starting Monday evening. Meanwhile San Diego Gas & Electric said it has notified nearly 117,500 customers that they might temporarily lose service to reduce the chance of wildfires. Santa Anas are dry, warm and gusty northeast winds that blow from the interior of Southern California toward the coast and offshore. They typically occur during the fall months and continue through winter and into early spring. In Northern California, the weather service said chances were increasing for an “impactful rainfall event” late in the week for the San Francisco Bay Area. Hundreds flee Gaza as IDF orders evacuations
The Trump transition team so far has not signed the requisite agreements with the White House or Justice Department to allow the FBI to screen his personnel choices , both for the process of obtaining security clearances and meeting the Senate’s usual standards for nominations. That means the Senate could be asked to vote on Trump’s picks without the usual rigorous background checking meant to uncover personal problems, criminal histories or other red flags that would raise questions about a nominee’s suitability for the job. There already are questions about problematic issues related to a number of the people Trump wants in his administration. “There are very real liabilities on the security side if you don’t get this right,” said Dan Meyer, a Washington lawyer at the Tully Rinckey law firm who specializes in background checks, security clearances and federal employment law. At issue is a memorandum of understanding under which a president — or in this case, an incoming one — submits requests for name and background checks and the FBI commits to flagging any adverse information uncovered during the process. That document has not yet been signed, with the Trump transition team relying instead on internal campaign aides, allied groups and law firms on the outside to support the personnel effort. Trump regards FBI leadership with suspicion, in part because of the Russian election interference investigation that shadowed his first term and more recently because of FBI investigations into his hoarding of classified documents and his efforts to undo the results of the 2020 election that led to his indictment last year. A Justice Department spokesperson said Wednesday that discussions were ongoing with the Trump transition team about signing the memo. For those appointees whose jobs involve a security clearance, a background check would be required. However, once Trump takes office on Jan. 20, 2025, he could simply order that people be given a security clearance , as he was reported to have done for son-in-law Jared Kushner during his first term . “The president is the head of the personnel security system,” Meyer said. “The director of national intelligence is his executive agent for that. The president could issue an executive order and he could change the security system in two seconds. It’s all his.” Lawmakers are complaining about what they see as insufficient screening of the picks they’re being asked to consider. Two Democratic House members, Don Beyer of Virginia and Ted Lieu of California, introduced a bill Tuesday that would codify the FBI’s role in the background check process for political appointees of the president. The issue is of particular relevance given the eyebrow-raising backgrounds of some of Trump’s picks. Trump’s choice for attorney general, former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, faced a Justice Department sex trafficking investigation into allegations involving underage girls that ended with no federal charges against him. There was also a House Ethics inquiry into whether Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct — allegations he denies. Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration Thursday after those issues cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. Pete Hegseth, picked for defense secretary, was accused of sexual assault in 2017 after a speaking appearance at a Republican women’s event in Monterey, California, but was not charged after a police investigation. His lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, described the sexual encounter as consensual and confirmed that Hegseth paid the woman a sum as part of a confidential settlement. Hegseth did so to head off a threatened lawsuit, according to Parlatore, who said his client was the victim of “blackmail.” The selection of former Democratic U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence alarmed U.S. intelligence analysts who point to her past criticism of Ukraine, comments supportive of Russia and secret meetings with Syrian President Bashar Assad, a close ally of Russia and Iran. The Senate has a responsibility to closely examine Gabbard and should not approve the confirmation just because Republicans feel a loyalty to Trump, said Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., his party’s ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee. “The Republican senator who votes to confirm Matt Gaetz or Robert Kennedy or Tulsi Gabbard will be remembered by history as somebody who completely gave up their responsibility to Donald Trump,” Himes said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
